General Breed Information

The Yugoslavian Hound is an indigenous breed that can be found in the southern regions of the former Yugoslavia. Dogs of this breed have two varieties: the Yugoslavian Tricolour Hound (also known as the Jugoslovenski Trobojni Gonic), and the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound (also called the Jugoslovenski Planinski Gonic). Both varieties are not well known outside their homeland.

Yugoslavian Hounds have a height that ranges from 17.7 to 21.7 inches and a weight that falls between 44 and 55 pounds. These dogs have a long head with a slightly domed skull and a straight nose bridge. Their muzzle is wedge-shaped and solid, and they have tight, black lips. They have pendulous ears with rounded tips. These dogs have a body that is a little longer than it is tall. Their neck is muscular and has no dewlap. These dogs have a deep, wide chest, and a muscular, slightly sloping, broad croup. Their tail may be straight or curved loosely. The coat of these dogs is dense and short, with the Planinski having a thick undercoat. The Yugoslavian Mountain Hound is coloured black and tan, with tan markings right above its eyes. The Yugoslavian Tricolour Hound can be wheaten-red or fox-red, and may have a black saddle. It may also have white markings on its neck, head, lower legs, chest, and tail tip.
