General Breed Information

The Villano de las Encartaciones is a rare dog breed that is said to have originated in Spain during the 1100s. Other theories claim that this breed is just a modern recreation of a breed that was developed during the 19th century by crossing Basque Herders with Spanish Alanos and other continental sheepdogs. Some fanciers of this breed also say that the Villano de las Encartaciones is descended from the Perro de Toro Español, the Perro Cimarron, and the Azores Cattledog. Regardless of the dog's ancestry, it's sure that specimens of this breed have been used for controlling rowdy cattle, hunting large game, guarding farms, and herding sheep in Western Spain. These dogs have also been used as fighting dogs, although they weren't bred for that purpose. The World Wars almost wiped out the breed, but revival efforts came into play during the 1960s. Today, this breed is still rare and unrecognized by major kennel clubs, but in Spain, it is increasing in popularity. In 1997, the National Villano de las Encartaciones Club was founded to honor this breed.

Dogs of this breed have an average height of approximately 23 inches. They are well-boned and muscular, with ears that are traditionally cropped. The coat of these dogs is flat and short, and is usually dark brindle in colour. Lighter dogs can be found as well, and there are even some specimens with white markings.
