General Breed Information
The Transylvanian Hound originated in Hungary during the ninth century. This breed was created when the Magyars brought with them some hounds and crossed them with Polish Hounds and local breeds. The Transylvanian Hound is used for hunting bear and wolf. This breed has two varieties: the Short-legged variety for hunting hare and fox, and the Long-legged variety, which is used for hunting lynx, deer, and wild boar.
The Short-legged Transylvanian Hound has a height that ranges from 18 to 22 inches, while the Long-legged variety has a height that falls between 22 and 26 inches. Their head is fairly long and they have a slightly domed skull with a stop that isn't pronounced. Their nose bridge is straight and they have tight lips. The eyes of these dogs are medium-sized, slightly slanted, oval in shape, and are dark brown in colour. Their ears have rounded tips. They have a tail that is set low and hangs down when they're at rest and is curled level with the topline when they are moving. The Short-legged Transylvanian Hound has a short, straight, and dense coat, while the Long-legged type has a coat with denser, harsher, longer hairs. The Short-legged variety is reddish-brown in colour, while the Long-legged variety is black with red spots on their muzzle, eyebrows, and legs. Both these types have white spots on their chest, forehead, tip of tail, and feet.
