General Breed Information
The Strellufstover is a dog breed that originated in Denmark during the 20th century. Frands Christian Frandsen, a resident of Hoisted, Jutland, wanted to create a hound with the independence and persistence to hunt different varieties of game found in the Hoisted area. In 1912, Frandsen acquired some Westphalian Dachsbracken from Germany and Smalandsstoveren from Sweden, as well as Berner Laufhunds from Switzerland, and began crossbreeding these dogs. During the mid-1920s, Frandsen had already succeeded in breeding the kind of dog he wanted, and hunters in Denmark were already using the Strellufstover. This breed is commonly used for hunting deer, hare, and fox. In 1937, the Strellufstover was granted official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.
Stellufstovers are 12 to 15 inches tall and 33 to 40 pounds heavy. These dogs have a wedge-shaped chiseled head, with a medium-sized muzzle and a black nose. Their almond-shaped eyes are medium-sized and light brown in colour. The ears of these dogs are broad and hang close to their cheeks. Their teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. These dogs have a long back and a narrow chest. They have short, muscular, and straight forelegs and hind legs, and their feet are round, with toes that are close together. The short coat of these dogs is thick, with a slight fringe on the tail. These dogs can come in any coat colour with white markings.
