General Breed Information
During the late 19th century, there were already several types of gun dogs with bristly coats. Originally, the Wirehair Club in Germany was the only organization for all hunting dogs that had a wire coat, but because of the wide variety of types, there soon became separate organizations for these dogs. The Griffon, Pudelpointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, and the Stichelhaar were separated, and although these breeds may have come from the same stock, they were individualized and developed separately. The Stichelhaar is a rare breed, with only around 10 to 15 registrations being made every year.
The Stichelhaar is 21 to 26 inches tall and approximately 44 pounds heavy. Dogs of this breed have a body that is slightly longer than it is tall. They have a broad and deep chest with well-sprung ribs. These dogs have a smooth skull. Their medium-sized, oval eyes are chestnut in colour, and their nose is black. The ears of these dogs are broad, set high, and hang close to their head. They have a medium-sized muzzle that is well-proportioned to their head. The teeth of these dogs meet in a scissors bite. Stichelhaars also have well-muscled, strong legs, and round feet with arched toes. Their coat is hard and bristly, and they have a moderate amount of eyebrows and mustache, as well as some feathering on their belly, legs, and chest. The coat colours for this breed are white and brown, in either a spotted or roan pattern.
