General Breed Information
The Stephens Stock Mountain Cur is among the five recognized strains of mountain curs. The family of Hugh Stephen, residing in southeastern Kentucky, had owned a strain for more than 100 years. Stephens was the Mountain Cur Club's first Vice President, and in 1970, the Stephens strain was deemed distinct enough to merit its own registry. Stephens Stock Mountain Curs are hunting dogs that are natural at treeing, but are more excellent at hunting coon and squirrel. Although these dogs are too small to go after big game individually, they can work as a pack against bears and mountain lions. Many hunters prefer to use Stephen Stock Mountain Curs because of their competitive hunting spirit and the sound of the dogs' voice on the trail. These dogs are also like hounds in the sense that they can follow a cold trail.
The Stephens Stock Mountain Cur has a height that falls between 16 and 23 inches and a weight that ranges from 35 to 55 pounds. The coat of these dogs is short and smooth, and is black in colour. These dogs can have some white markings. There are also some Stephens Stock Mountain Curs that aren't black, but these dogs cannot be registered.
