General Breed Information

The Spanish Hound is an indigenous dog breed that originated in Spain. This breed has two varieties: the Small or Lightweight Spanish Hound and the Great Spanish Hound. Dogs of this breed are known for their ability to hunt hare, but they are also great with working on all kinds of quarry. They are also used as utility dogs and watchdogs.

The Male Great Spanish Hound has a height that ranges from 20 to 22 inches, while the female has a height of 19 to 20 1/2 inches. The Male Small Spanish Hound is under 20 inches tall, while the female is under 19 inches high. Great Spanish Hounds weigh approximately 55 pounds, while Small Spanish Hounds weigh around 44 pounds. Both these varieties have a long, domed skull with a wrinkled forehead. Their muzzle is long and slightly domed, and they have thin lips. Their ears are thin, very long, and supple, and their brown eyes have well-pigmented eyelids. The body of these dogs is long and powerful. They have a strong neck and a deep and broad chest with well-arched ribs. Their loins are relatively short and they have a straight back. The coat of these dogs is short, glossy, and fine. Great Spanish Hounds have a coat that is white with large black or orange spots. Small Spanish Hounds are white with black or red spots that are sometimes large enough to cover their body except for their muzzle, neck, lower legs, and chest.
