The Small Greek Domestic Dog, also known as the Meliteo Kinidio, was once thought to be of the same breed as the Alopekis. This has changed since then because both breed true to type. Small Greek Domestic Dogs are more common and more numerous than the Alopekis. Because of the small size of these dogs, they are often kept by people as family pets. Images found on ancient pottery even show these dogs serving as companions to children and women.

Small Greek Domestic Dogs are medium-sized dogs that have a weight that ranges from 20 to 25 pounds. These dogs look similar to the Cocker Spaniel and Longhaired Dachshund. Their muzzle tapers to a point, and their nose has well-opened nostrils. They have strong jaws and their teeth meet in a scissors bite. They have large eyes which can be either round or almond-shaped. The colour of their eyes depends upon the colour of their coat, but they will never be blue or transparent. The tail of these dogs is long, sickle-shaped, and is carried high. The coat of these dogs is silky and can either be shorthaired or longhaired, with the longhaired coat being more common.
