General Breed Information

The Small Bernese Hound is not really a separate breed. Rather, it is a variety of the Small Swiss Hound. The Small Swiss Hound was created because the larger Swiss Hounds were too fast to hunt in enclosed hunting grounds. Through selective and controlled breeding, shorter-legged and smaller scenthounds were developed.

Small Bernese Hounds have a lightly arched skull that has no furrows or wrinkles. These dogs have a fairly long and strong muzzle, with a slightly convex or straight nasal bridge. Their white teeth are evenly spaced and meet in a scissors bite. They have a dark-coloured nose with wide open nostrils. These dogs have oval-shaped, dark eyes that are clear and have a friendly expression. They have a moderately long body with a deep and broad chest. These dogs have moderately rounded, long ribs that reach well back. Their loins are strong, broad, and supple, and they have a slightly sloping croup. What makes the Small Bernese Hound different from other varieties of the Small Swiss Hound, though, is its coat. The Small Bernese Hound has a coat that is always tricolour, having the colours tan, black, and white. These dogs are white with large patches of black, and they may have some black mottling. Tan markings can also be seen on their cheeks, above their eyes, and on the inside and upper part of their leathers. They may also have a black mantle.
