General Breed Information
The Smalandsstovare is a dog breed that originated in Sweden during the 16th century. An ancient dog breed, the Smalandsstovare is believed to have been existing since the Middle Ages. The selective breeding of these dogs weren't started until the 19th century, though, and that's why it was only in 1921 that this breed gained recognition from the Swedish Kennel Club. These dogs are commonly used for hunting hare and fox throughout the dense forests of the Smalands district located in southern Sweden. The excellent scenting ability of these dogs enable them to work in all kinds of terrain and different weather conditions.
The Smalandsstovare has a height of approximately 17 inches and a weight that ranges from 33 to 40 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a head that is more wedge-shaped and shorter than the head of most hounds. Their ears are flat and very small in size. The body of these dogs is small and cobby, which may be an indication that these dogs were a result of the cross-breeding of hounds to various native-type Nordic dogs. The coat of the Smalandsstovare is short, heavy, and thick. These dogs are usually black, but they have some tan markings that are similar to the markings of the Rottweiler.
