General Breed Information
The Slovakian Hound is a very old dog breed that is believed to be a descendant of the scenthounds that were prevalent in eastern Europe during ancient times. Dogs of this breed were endurance trailing hounds that were used for hunting wild boar and other predators. In 2006, this breed was granted official recognition by the United Kennel Club.
Male Slovakian Hounds have a height of 17 1/2 to 19 1/2 inches, while females have a height of 15 1/2 to 17 1/2 inches. These dogs are 33 to 44 pounds heavy. Slovakian Hounds have a fairly long skull that is slightly domed with a marked frontal furrow. They have a long muzzle that isn't too broad, and their nasal bridge is straight. Their nose is black and is fairly large in size. The white teeth of these dogs are evenly spaced and meet in a scissors bite. These dogs have almond-shaped, deeply set eyes that are dark in colour and have a courageous, lively expression. They have medium length ears with rounded tips. Their chest is broad and deep, with well-sprung ribs. They have a medium length and straight back. Their feet are oval-shaped, with strong pads and well-arched toes. Slovakian Hounds have a dense undercoat and a close-fitting and coarse outer coat. These dogs are black in colour, with tan markings on their legs.
The average life span of these dogs is 11 to 13 years.
