General Breed Information
The Sanshu Dog is a breed that was created in Honshu, Japan, in 1912. The breeders of this dog began by crossing middle-sized indigenous Japanese dogs with the Chinese breed Chow Chow. Although the Sanshu Dog is a popular dog breed in Japan and is used as a companion dog, it has not gained official recognition from any major kennel club.
Sanshu Dogs have a height that ranges from 16 to 22 inches and a weight that falls between 40 and 60 pounds. The body of these dogs is compact and sturdy. They also have a muscular and powerful build and a large, wedge-shaped head with pronounced cheeks. Their muzzle is medium length and tapers to a point, with a black nose at its tip. They have almond-shaped eyes that are deep set and are dark in colour. These dogs have triangular ears that are small, erect, and leans forward slightly. They have straight forelegs and well-muscled hind leg, as well as a tail that curls over their back.. The feet of these dogs are small, cat-like, and round, and their coat is short and harsh. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include black and tan, red, tan, fawn, pied, and salt and pepper.
The life span of these dogs is approximately 10 to 12 years.
