General Breed Information

The Sage Ashayeri is an ancient dog breed that originated in Iran. Dogs of this breed were used by the Qashqai and Bakhtiari tribes of Central and Western Iran. These dogs were traditionally used as flock defenders, but they can also work as hunters of bears and wild boars. Also called Ashayeri Sheepdogs, these dogs can be found in Iran and its surrounding regions, where they're kept as pets and property guardians. The Sage Ashayeri is not officially recognized by any major kennel club and is fairly unknown in the western world.

There are two main types of the Sage Ashayeri: the Qashqai type and Bakhtiari type. The Qashqai dogs are smooth-haired and lean, while the Bakhtiari dogs are more mastiff-like in appearance and have longer coats. Both types have a muscular body with strong legs and a powerful neck. The tail of these dogs is usually docked, although there are many specimens with their tails left as is. These dogs are usually bicoloured, and the acceptable coat colour combinations include red and white, yellow and white, black and white, and brown and white. They may also come in solid colours such as grey, brown, and fawn. Although not common, there are tricoloured and brindled specimens as well. The Sage Ashayeri is smaller than many other breeds found in the region, having only a height that is 20 inches or less.
