General Breed Information

The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient hound that makes use of its scenting, seeing, and hearing ability to hunt with its human companions. This breed originated in Portugal. This breed comes in three types: the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, the Portuguese Podengo Medio, and the Portuguese Podengo Grande. The Pequeno type hunts rabbit, the Medio hunts wild boar and rabbit, and the Grande hunts deer and wild boar. The organizations that recognize this breed include the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the Continental Kennel Club, the American Kennel Club, the National Kennel Club, and the United Kennel Club.

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno has a height of 8 to 12 inches and a weight of 9 to 13 pounds. The Medio stands at 15 to 22 inches and weighs 35 to 44 pounds, while the Grande is 22 to 27 inches tall and 44 to 66 pounds heavy. These dogs usually have a brown nose, although it may sometimes be black. They have large ears that are triangular and naturally upright. These dogs have a straight muzzle and a muscular and prominent chest. These dogs have a strong and muscular neck that doesn't have a dewlap. Their tail hangs down when they are calm, but when they are moving or excited, their tail is horizontal. These dogs have cat-like feet with well-arched toes and strong, hard pads. They can be wire-haired or smooth-coated. Acceptable coat colours include fawn, black, and yellow. They may have white markings.
