General Breed Information

The exact origin of the Portuguese Hound is unknown, but it is theorized that dogs of this breed may have descended from small wolves that are native to Portugal and Spain. It is also said that these dogs have large-eared hounds as ancestors. In Portugal, Portuguese Hounds are used as hunters and as pets. This breed has three varieties: the Large Portuguese Hound, which is a very rare breed used to hunt large game, the Medium Portuguese Hound, which can be a pack hunter of rabbits and looks similar to the Ibizan Hound, and the Small Portuguese Hound, which looks similar to the Chihuahua and is able to hunt rabbits underground.

Portuguese Hounds have a height that ranges from 8 to 27 inches and a weight that falls between 9 and 66 pounds. These dogs have a unique appearance. They have large, bat-like ears and small, light brown eyes. They have a rectangular muzzle that ends in a small black or brown nose. Their neck is muscular, their shoulders are broad, and their stomach is sunken in. The legs of these dogs are skinny, and their feet are cat-like. These dogs can either be smooth-coated or wire-haired. Wire-haired Portuguese Hounds may have medium to long hair, while smooth-coated Portuguese Hounds have a coat that lies flat against their body. Acceptable coat colours include yellow, black, and fawn. They may also have white markings.
