General Breed Information

The Polski Owczarek Nizinny, also known as the Polish Lowland Sheepdog, has been existing in Poland since the 13th century. It is said that this breed is a descendant of the Puli and other herding dogs. The Polski Owczarek Nizinny has also been bred with local Scottish dogs to develop various Scottish herding dogs, among which is the Bearded Collie. During the Second World War, the Polski Owczarek Nizinny became in danger of extinction. Fortunately, Dr. Danuta Hryeniewicz started to restore the breed during the 1950s. In 1959, the breed standard was approved by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

The height of the Polski Owczarek Nizinny ranges from 16 to 20 inches and its weight falls between 30 and 35 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a fairly broad, level back. They have broad, well-muscled loins and thighs. These dogs have a dark-coloured nose and their eyes are either brown or hazel. Their teeth meet in a level bite. These dogs may have natural bobtails. If they have a long tail, it is usually docked short. The coat of these dogs is wire-haired, with a soft undercoat. All coat colours are acceptable, but common colours include white with black or grey, or plain grey.

These dogs have a life span of around 12 to 15 years.
