General Breed Information

The Polish Hound is a dog breed that is native to Poland. It is, however, theorized that dogs of this breed are descendants of tracking dogs from Austria and Germany. Polish Hounds were used for hunting foxes, wild boars, and hares. During the late 19th century, these dogs became in danger of extinction because of the Second World War. It was only after the war that this breed was restored. In 1966, the Polish Hound was granted official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Polish Hounds have a height that ranges from 22 to 26 inches and a weight that falls between 55 and 71 pounds. These dogs have a massive body with a broad chest and well-curved ribs. They have a fairly heavy head that is elegantly chiseled and with well-developed brow bones. The forehead of these dogs is very wrinkled, and they have strong jaws and thick, pendulous flews. They have fairly long ears that are slightly rounded at the tip, hang freely, and are set on low. Their dark brown eyes are slanted. They have a fairly low set tail that is slightly pendulous and hangs lower than their hocks. The coat of these dogs is medium length, thick, and slightly longer on the backs of their hind legs, on the spine, and on the lower part of their tail. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include black and fawn. They may also have white markings on their lower legs, chest, and tail tip.
