General Breed Information

Bull-baiting and dogfighting were once popular sports in Spain. Large fighting dogs were well renowned in Spain, and these dogs were generally called Perro de Presa, which means a holding or gripping dog. Bull-baiting is no longer being practiced in Spain, but dogfighting is still relatively prevalent in rural areas in the country. When organized dogfighting dwindled throughout the rest of the country, it continued in some islands off the Spanish coast. On the Balearic island of Mallorca, there is a breed that has been granted recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. This breed is known as the Perra de Presa Mallorquin, and there's much discussion regarding whether this breed is now extinct or just very rare.

The Perro de Presa Mallorquin has a height that ranges from 22 to 28 inches and a weight that falls between 78 and 150 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a straight back that is slightly sloping towards their loins. They have a square-shaped, powerful head with a medium-sized muzzle ending in a black nose. The eyes of these dogs are oval-shaped, dark-coloured, and wide set. Their ears are usually cropped, while their tail is often docked short. These dogs have strong and straight forelegs and muscular hind legs. They have compact and small feet. The Perro de Presa Mallorquin has a short or medium coat that can come in various shades of red, tan, fawn, or yellow, with or without brindling.
