General Breed Information

The Perro de Pastor Mallorquin is an ancient breed that was brought to the Balearic Islands on early trade routes that pass through the Mediterranean. Due to the isolation of these dogs in the islands, it is theorized that they may have been crossed with other types or have mutated through the years, because they have the ability to withstand extreme heat. It is not known whether these dogs were brought around the Iberian Peninsula to Portugal or vice versa. These dogs are quite common in Spain, but they are relatively unknown outside that country. Some specimens of this breed, however, have been exported to Brazil. This breed is also recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

The Perro de Pastor Mallorquin has a height of around 19 to 22 inches and a weight of approximately 45 to 62 pounds. These dogs have a strong and straight back, and muscular loins. Their head is sharply defined, with a medium-sized muzzle that is well-proportioned to their head. Their nose is black and they have teeth that meet in either a level or scissors bite. They have a strong and short neck, and a level topline. Their chest is broad and deep, and they have well-sprung ribs. These dogs have strong and straight forelegs, muscular hind legs, and compact feet that are small, with hard pads and arched toes. Their coat can be short or medium in length, and it can be black or dark brindle in colour.
