General Breed Information

The Old Time Farm Shepherd was nearly extinct when several individuals decided to revive the breed. Erica DuBois of Nova Scotia and J. Richard McDuffie of Aiken, South Carolina started a search for the old Scotch Collie type of dog that was prevalent in the eighties. Despite their distance, McDuffie and DuBois were able to help each other, and they found four distinct bloodlines of the Scotch Collie type of dogs. Because of their efforts, the National Kennel Club now has more than 50 registrations of Old Time Farm Shepherds.

Old Time Farm Shepherds are well-muscled and powerful dogs. They are well-balanced, and are longer than they are tall. The head of these dogs is very broad, with a thick and large muzzle. Their nose is black, and their lips are deep and close-fitting. Their teeth meet in a scissors bite. These dogs have large eyes that can be of any colour, and wedge-shaped ears that are set wide apart and are carried erect. Their shoulders are wide apart and slightly sloping, and they have large, round feet that are slightly splayed, with well-arched toes. The thighs of these dogs are powerfully muscled and broad, with moderately bent stifles, and hocks that are set wide apart. Old Time Farm Shepherds can either have a short or plush coat that can come in any colour.
