General Breed Information

In the 1940s, Russian cynologists made efforts to create six distinct breeds out of the many Northern hunting and herding and draft type dogs from the Soviet Union and Siberia. They then established four hunting and sledding breeds, one herding and sledding breed, and one pure sledding breed, even though they know that there are other types of dogs that do not fit into these categories. The Northeasterly Hauling Laika is the pure sledding breed. It is said that this breed was created using different native draft types.

Northeasterly Hauling Laikas are 75 to 110 pounds heavy and 23 to 27 inches high. These dogs have a wolf-like and long head with a medium-sized muzzle that tapers to a point. The nose of these dogs is black, and their eyes are dark-coloured. These dogs have triangular-shaped ears that are long and stiffly erect. They have a thickly muscled neck, and an oval and deep chest. The forelegs of these dogs are muscular and straight, while their hind legs are well-muscled and firm, with well-bent hocks and stifles. Their tail is curled and carried over their back on one side, and they have well-arched, strong feet that are covered with hair. The coat of these dogs is thick and medium-length, and it can come in all colours.
