General Breed Information

The Mucuchies is a dog breed that is said to have been descended from different livestock guard dogs such as the Great Pyrenees, Pyrenean Mastiff, and Spanish Mastiff. These dogs were brought to Venezuela by Spaniards during the early 1900s. By 1926, specimens of the Mucuchies could be found across the Venezuela Andes and other regions, particularly in the Caracas. Unfortunately, inbreeding and bad breeding hurt the stock. A club was founded in 1961 to make sure that breeding practices would remain uniform and that the dogs would be improved. In 1964, the Mucuchies was named as Venezuela's national dog breed. Recently, though, the breed club was disbanded, making the future of this breed uncertain.

The Mucuchies has a height that falls between 22 and 28 inches and a weight that ranges from 66 to 110 pounds. Dogs of this breed look similar to Collies because of their short coat and their feathering on the legs. The coat of these dogs can be solid white, or white with markings of different colours. These markings can be shades of black or honey in colour.
