General Breed Information

The Mioritic Sheepdog originated from the Carpathian mountains of Romania. This breed was developed from a natural breed that existed in the Carpathians. The breed standard was written in 1981 by The Asociatia Chinologica Romana (Romanian Kennel Club), but it was only given official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1995. In 2002, the standard made by the Romanian Kennel Club was revised.

Male Mioritic Sheepdogs have a height of 27 to 29 inches, while females have a height of 25 to 28 inches. The weight of these dogs ranges from 30 to 70 pounds. The Mioritic Sheepdog is a large dog with a slightly arched skull and a large, broad head. Their medium-sized eyes are slightly oval in shape and may be either hazel or amber in colour. They have pendant ears, and teeth that meet in a scissors bite. Their body is rectangular, and they have a well-muscled and straight back. These dogs have a deep and broad chest, and their shoulders are also broad, with slightly arched elbows. The tail and ears of these dogs may be cropped. The coat of these dogs is long and fluffy. Acceptable coat colours include white, pale gray, and cream.

Mioritic Sheepdogs usually live for around 12 to 14 years.
