General Breed Information

The Lucas Terrier is a relatively new breed, having been developed in Great Britain during the 1940s. Sir Jocelyn Lucas is credited for having developed this breed. Lucas felt that the Sealyham Terrier was too large to be able to work efficiently, so he crossed female Sealyham Terriers with male Norfolk Terriers to create the Lucas Terrier. Dogs of this breed have been in the United States since the 1960s, but is considered a relatively rare breed with only less than 100 specimens inside America.

Male Lucas Terriers have a height that ranges from 10 to 12 inches and a weight of 14 to 20 pounds. Females stand 9 to 11 inches high and weigh 11 to 17 pounds. Lucas Terriers are sturdy, symmetrically built working terriers. These dogs have a broad skull with a slight but definite stop. Their cheeks are muscular but not prominent, and they have a black nose. Their ears are moderate in size and are usually small and carried close to the head. These dogs have a medium-length coat that is weather-resistant and fairly harsh. There are two colour varieties for the Lucas Terrier. The Irwin variety sports a white coat with markings of black, badger-gray, tan, black and badger-gray, or black and tan. It's also acceptable for these dogs to be solid white. The Frost variety can be in any shade of tan, and can have white markings on their legs, chest, feet, underside, neck, and muzzle.
