Group

Origin / History The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is a breed believed to have been developed from the Nordic Wolfhound. It is said that the area of Catahoula in the state of Louisiana is the origin of the breed. In 1979, the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog was named as the state dog of Louisiana.

This breed was used to round up cattle and feral pigs. Three dogs usually work as a team, and they must work well together. If not, then one pig can kill the three dogs. Each dog should be aware of what the other two dogs and the pig are doing so that it can react properly. Hunters also used dogs of this breed for trailing and treeing raccoons, although they are utilized more for rounding unruly cattle and hogs.

Appearance Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dogs are bred to be working dogs rather than show dogs, which is why they can vary in appearance. These dogs have a single coat, which is tight and short. Their skull is flat and broad, and they have ears that hang down just below their eye. The eyes of these dogs are considered their main feature, and have often been referred to as "glass eyes" or "haunting eyes" due to their light blue colour. Some specimens of this breed, though, have brown eyes. These dogs have strong-boned, solid legs. Their deep chest enables them to have good lung and heart capacity. Some of these dogs have a short tail.

Colours The coat of these dogs can have either a black and tan, or merle pattern.

Temperament Dogs of this breed are territorial and independent. They are quite reserved with strangers, but are loving to their family members and those they know well. Although these dogs are affectionate with their owners, they aren't recommended for casual pet owners who aren't capable of attending to the needs of these dogs.

Height and Weight Male dogs of this breed have a height that ranges from 22 to 26 inches, while females have a height that falls between 20 to 24 inches. These dogs weigh between 55 and 80 pounds.

Common Health Problems These dogs are susceptible to getting afflicted with deafness and hip dysplasia. Eye problems such as tunnel vision may also be developed by dogs of this breed. Some older specimens of Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dogs have also gotten cancer.

Living Conditions It's important for these dogs to have human companionship. They shouldn't be left alone in a kennel or kept chained for long periods of time, because they may grow up to be aggressive or shy if this is done. Due to their single coat, these dogs don't do well in cold weather, so they must be given adequate protection during the winter season.

Exercise Requirements These dogs need much exercise, and they may become destructive and develop behavioral problems in case their exercise needs are not met. They need to be taken out for a long walk, hike, or run daily. It's also advisable for these dogs to be allowed to run around freely in a large, secure area.

Training Requirements Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dogs need owners who know how to display strong leadership skills. These dogs are quite independent, so owners should know how to make their dogs believe that humans are higher in pack rank than canines. It's also important for these dogs to undergo proper socialization at an early age.

Life Expectancy The life span of these dogs is approximately 12 to 13 years.

Grooming The short coat of these dogs needs little grooming. Bathing should be done only several times a year, but these dogs should be brushed at least once a week. Their teeth should be cleaned and it's important that their nails are trimmed.
