General Breed Information
The Levesque is a breed that was developed in 1873 by Rogatien Levesque. The breeds used for the foundation of the Levesque were the English Foxhound, the Bleu Gascony, and the Virelade. The resulting breed, the Levesque, was originally bred for pack hunting. Dogs of this breed can be used for hunting all types of game. Today, these dogs are rare because of interbreeding with other dog breeds. They may even be extinct. Many French cynologists theorize that specimens of this breed were used for the development of the Chien Francais Blanc et Noir in 1957.
These dogs have a height that ranges from 26 to 28 inches and a weight that falls between 55 and 66 pounds. This breed bears some similarities to the Grand Gascon when it comes to conformation, colour, and size. The Levesque has a lighter built than other large French hounds. Dogs of this breed have a short and smooth coat that is tri-colour. Their coat is white with no ticking, with tan markings on the head and a large black mantle or blanket-like patch on their body.
