General Breed Information
The Sami people of northern Europe used Spitz-type dogs to manage their herds of reindeer for a long time. After the Second World War, most of these dogs were already lost. After the war, breeders in Finland and Sweden tried to recreate the lost herding dogs. In Finland, the first breed was recognized by the Finnish Kennel Club as the Kukonharjulainen. This breed was created by crossing herding dogs with Karelian Bear Dogs. Other breeders created another breed, which came to be known as the Lapinporokoira or the Lapponian Herder. The two kennel clubs merged, but in 1966, they were separated again. One breed was renamed as the Lapphund, while the other was the Lapinporokoira.
Dogs of this breed are medium-sized, with males having a height of 20 inches, and females standing at 18 inches tall. The male and female dogs of this breed look distinctly different. The ears of these dogs are pricked. These dogs have a dense undercoat and a coarse and stiff outer coat. The colour of these dogs is usually black, brown, or dark grey, with a lighter shade on their head and lower parts of the body. They may also have white markings.
