General Breed Information

The Karelian Bear Laika is a dog breed used for hunting big game. Dogs of this breed originated in Karelia, an area in northern Europe that is now found in Finland. It was in 1936 that the Karelian Bear Laika was first presented in the show ring. By the end of the Second World War, however, this breed was already in danger of extinction. There were only approximately 40 dogs left after the war, and these were used for breeding more Karelian Bear Laikas. Today, the Karelian Bear Laika is also being bred in Europe and North America, so that they can be used as hunting dogs and show dogs.

Karelian Bear Laikas have a height of 19 to 24 inches and a weight of 44 to 50 pounds. These dogs are moderately sized, strong-boned, and well-built. The head of these dogs have a head that is shaped like a blunt wedge, and they have small, prick ears that point slightly outward. Karelian Bear Laikas have powerful jaws. Their tail is long and curls over their back in a Spitz arch. They have a double coat, with a soft and dense undercoat and a short-haired, stiff, and straight outer coat. The coat of these dogs should be black with white markings on their neck, belly, chest, legs, and head.

The average life span of these dogs is 10 to 12 years.
