General Breed Information

The Istrian Short-Haired Hound is an ancient dog breed that is native to Istria. Due to the excellent hunting qualities of these dogs, they were exported from Istria to neighboring regions. It was in 1924 that these dogs were first registered in studbooks. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized the breed in 1949, but it was only in 1973 that the first standard for the Istrian Short-Haired Hound was written. Today, dogs of this breed can be found in Istria and in regions surrounding it, where hunters still use these dogs for hunting fox and hare.

The ideal height for male Istrian Short-Haired Hounds is 19 1/2 inches, while the ideal height for females is 18 1/2 inches. Males usually weigh around 40 pounds, while females weigh a little less than that. Istrian Short-Haired Hounds have a skull with a slightly rounded frontal bone and a pronounced occiput. Their muzzle is broad at the base, long, and tapers towards their nose. They have a straight nasal bridge and a dark brown or black nose. The eyes of these dogs are oval-shaped and dark brown in colour, and their eyelids may be brown or black. These dogs have ears that are thin and are set slightly above the line of their eyes. The coat of these dogs is short, dense, glossy, and fine. The acceptable coat colour is white with patches or ticking that is lemon in colour.
