General Breed Information

The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound is a dog breed that has been existing in Istria since the 1800s. The oldest descriptions of this breed can be read in the chronicles of Petar Bakic, the bishop of Djakovo. Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds were first presented in the show ring in 1910. In 1924, these dogs were registered in the Croatian stud book for the first time. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale granted recognition to the breed in 1948, and the first breed standard was established in 1969.

Istrian Coarse-Haired Hounds have a slightly rounded skull with a well-developed occiput and a quite broad frontal bone. The muzzle of these dogs is rectangular and strong with a well-developed and broad nose at its tip. These dogs have a complete set of white, evenly spaced teeth that meet in a scissors bite. They have large, dark eyes with a serious expression. The legs of these dogs are well-muscled and upright, while their feet are cat-like, but narrow and with tight toes. Their tail isn't set too high, is strong at the root, and tapers to the end. The outer coat of these dogs is fairly long, harsh, bristly, and dull. They have a thick, short undercoat. These dogs are snow white in colour, but they have bright lemon-orange markings on their body and ears.

These dogs can live for approximately 12 years.
