General Breed Information

The Halden Hound is a dog breed that is named after the town of Halden, which is located in southeastern Norway. This breed is said to be the result of crosses between English, German, Swedish, and local scenthounds. During the 1950s, the breed standard for the Halden Hound was established. Although dogs of this breed are quite common in Norway, it is still relatively unknown outside that country.

Halden Hounds weigh between 40 and 55 pounds, and they stand at approximately 17 to 21 1/2 inches. These dogs have a rectangular body with well-sprung ribs and a deep chest. They have a broad loin and a solid, straight back. The croup of these dogs is slightly sloping, rounded, and well-developed. These dogs have a medium-sized head and a slightly domed skull with a pronounced stop. Their nose bridge is straight, and their lips are not too pendulous. The ears of these dogs are pendulous and must reach up to the middle of their muzzle when outstretched. The medium-sized eyes of these dogs are dark brown in colour. Halden Hounds have a fairly thick tail that is carried low and hangs almost to their hocks. They have a very dense, smooth coat that is neither too short nor too fine. The coat colour of these dogs is white with black spots. They may also have brown shading on their legs and head, as well as between the black and white markings.
