General Breed Information

Among the oldest French scenthound breeds is the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne. It is said that dogs of this breed have been existing since the 14th century. These dogs were used for hunting wolves. When wolves disappeared, they began hunting other game such as roe deer, hare, wild boar, and fox. In 1996, this breed was granted recognition by the United Kennel Club.

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne has a height of 19 to 22 inches and a weight that ranges from 40 to 48 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a skull that is slightly arched and is rather long. Their muzzle tapers slightly from their eyes to their nose. Their lips aren't pendulous, but the lips cover their lower jaw. The teeth of these dogs are white, evenly spaced, and meet in a scissors bite. They have a nose that may be dark brown or black, and their eyes are dark brown with tight rims. The ears of these dogs are slightly turned and are set on a line with their eyes. The coat of these dogs is very rough, rather short, and harsh. The coat colours for this breed include any shade of fawn. They may also have a few black hairs or a white star on their chest.

These dogs are expected to live for around 12 to 13 years.
