General Breed Information

The Griffon Bleu de Gascogne is an old breed with an ancient Pyrenean origin. This breed is a product of the interbreeding of a Griffon with a medium-sized Gascony Blue. Dogs of this breed are used for hunting wild boar and hare. These dogs were once in danger of extinction, but the breed is now being revived. The breed standard was written by Marquis de Mauleon and Baron de Batz in 1920. In 1991, this breed was granted recognition by the United Kennel Club.

The Griffon Bleu de Gascogne is a medium-sized dog that has a solid build. Dogs of this breed have a slightly domed skull that is not too broad, with a full forehead and lean cheeks. The muzzle of these dogs has approximately the same length as their skull, and they have a slightly arched or straight nasal bridge. The teeth of these dogs are evenly spaced and meet in a scissors bite. These dogs have a large, black nose with well-opened nostrils, and their oval-shaped eyes are dark chestnut in colour. The ears of these dogs are set just below eye level. Their coat is rough, shaggy, and hard, and is a little shorter on their ears and head. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include mottled white and black, with or without patches that are solid black in colour. They have a white blaze on their face, and tan markings are found on their legs, head, and under their tail.
