General Breed Information

The Greek Sheepdog, also known as the Hellenikos Poimenikos, is said to have originated when Turkish travelers brought their dogs with them and these dogs bred with other dogs that were already in the country. Eventually, the Greek Sheepdog was created. It is theorized that the dog brought by the Turkish travelers is the Turkish Akbash Dog. The Greek Sheepdog has been granted official recognition by the Kennel Club of Greece and the American Pet Registry Inc.

The Greek Sheepdog is similar in appearance to the Great Pyrenees and the Saint Bernard. Greek Sheepdogs have a large, broad head and a strong muzzle. They have round eyes with folds of skin under them. The ears of these dogs are large and sit naturally on the sides of their head. They have a thick neck that has folds of loose skin. The legs of these dogs are long and muscular and their feet are small. Their body is covered by long, fluffy fur that is particularly abundant on their tail and head. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include dark brown, white, black, gray, and brown. Greek Sheepdogs have a height of 25 to 29 inches and a weight of 84 to 110 pounds

The life span of these dogs is approximately 12 years.
