General Breed Information

The Greek Hound, also known as the Hellenikos Ichnilatis, is a breed that has been existing for thousands of years. Its ancestors were the ancient Laconikoi Kynes which were native to Southern Greece. The descendants of Greek Hounds can be found throughout Europe. In Greece, this breed was isolated in mountainous and inaccessible areas, which made these dogs remain pure and almost unchanged. In 1996, this breed was granted recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, becoming the first Greek breed to be recognized by the organization. The Greek Hound is also recognized by the American Pet Registry Inc. and the American Canine Registry.

Greek Hounds have a height that ranges from 18 to 22 inches and a weight that falls between 38 and 45 pounds. These dogs have a long head with a wide forehead. Their large eyes are dark in colour. They have flat ears and a medium-sized muzzle that ends in a black nose. The teeth of these dogs meet in a scissors or level bite. They have a medium-length neck and a level topline. The chest of these dogs is broad, and they have well-sprung ribs. Their legs are well-set, angulated, strong, and muscular, and their feet are round. The thick and short coat of these dogs is black and fire red, and these dogs have small, white markings on the chest.

The life span of these dogs is around 11 years.
