General Breed Information
The Gascons Saintongeois originated from the Saintongeois region of France, which is located on the western coat just below Poitou and north of Gascony. Before the French Revolution, the hounds of Saintongeois were widely used for hunting wolf. These dogs, however, decreased in number due to the fall of the nobility. During the 1840s, Baron de Virelade looked for specimens of these dogs and crossed them with Grand Gasconies to develop the Gascons Santongeois breed. This breed is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.
The Gascons Saintongeois is almost as large as the Grand Bleu but is more powerful. This breed was originally used for hunting roe deer. Today, they are used for hunting boar and fox as well. These dogs have a very sensitive sense of smell, making them adaptable to various forms of hunting. The Gascons Saintongeois is a very rare breed. In 1986, there were only ten packs of these dogs left in France.
Dogs of this breed have a height of 25 to 28 inches and a weight of 66 to 71 pounds. Their coat is tricolour, with a white body, black and tan spots on their head, and black ticking throughout their coat.
