The history of the Gammel Dansk Honsehund can be traced to as far back as the year 1710, when Morten Bak, who lived in Glenstrup, crossed gypsy dogs with local farmdogs, producing a pure breed of piebald white and brown dogs. These dogs are the Gammel Dansk Honsehunds, also called the Old Danish Pointing Dogs or Bakhounds.

The Gammel Dansk Honsehund is a medium-sized dog that has a strong and rectangular build. Female dogs of this breed are distinctly lighter, more capricious, and more spirited than male ones. The Gammel Dansk Honsehund has a short and wide head without a pronounced stop. Dogs of this breed have a fleshy nose with wide open nostrils. They have flews that cover their lower jaw and their teeth meet in a regular scissors bite. The cheeks of these dogs are deep, muscular, and well-defined. They also have medium-sized eyes that are neither prominent nor sunken. They have ears that are set rather low, with the front edge hanging close to their cheek. The coat of these dogs is dense and short. The coat of these dogs is white with brown markings. The shades of brown may vary, but dark brown is preferable.
