General Breed Information

Although the exact origin of the French White and Black Hound is not well-documented, it is generally believed that this breed has been in existence since the 18th century. It is said that this breed was created by crossing the Basset Artesian Normand along with other European Pointer breeds. This theory, however, has yet to be scientifically proven. French White and Black Hounds have been used for scenting, tracking, and hunting game such as fox and deer. Aside from being excellent working dogs, they are also good companions. Today, the breed is quite popular as a hunting and companion dog, although it is still relatively rare outside France.

French White and Black Hounds have a height that ranges from 25 to 28 inches and a weight that is approximately 66 pounds. These dogs have a fairly large head and a slightly domed skull with a slight stop. Their ears turn slightly, and they have dark-coloured eyes. The neck of these dogs is fairly long and strong, and their chest is longer than it is wide. They also have slightly rounded ribs and a fairly thick tail. The thick and dense coat of these dogs should be white and black with a large mantle or large black spots.

These dogs can live for around 12 to 14 years. Common health problems of this breed include eye problems and hip dysplasia.
