General Breed Information

The French Spaniel is a dog breed that was widely used as a bird hunter in France during the 1600s. This breed is related to the Dutch Partridge Dog and the German Small Munsterlander. It is also a distant descendant of the Chien d'Oysel, a dog whose history can be traced to as far back as the Middle Ages. The French Spaniel decreased in number because of competition with English breeds. Fortunately, Father Fournier revived the breed during the 19th century. In 1891, J. de Connick wrote the first breed standard for the French Spaniel. Today, these dogs are still considered to be very rare, even in its native land. The organizations that recognize this breed include the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the National Kennel Club, the Continental Kennel Club, and the American Canine Registry.

Male French Spaniels have a height of 22 to 24 inches, while females have a height of 21 to 23 inches. These dogs weigh between 44 and 55 pounds. French Spaniels have a medium length head with a slightly domed nose bridge and a brown nose. The eyes of these dogs are large, dark amber in colour, and have a gentle and intelligent expression. These dogs have a muscular neck and a slightly sloping back. The coat of these dogs is close, water-resistant, and dense. French Spaniels also have feathering on their belly, ears, tail, and along the back of their legs. The coat of these dogs is white with liver markings.
