Group
Origin / History The Fila Brasileiro is said to have been developed from various breeds such as the Bloodhound, the Mastiff and the Bulldog. The Bloodhound contributed its tracking ability to the breed, while the Fila Brasileiro's courage, alert disposition and compact body comes from the Mastiff. A man by the name of Paulo Santos Cruz is responsible for writing the breed standard and importing the Fila Brasileiro from the farms to Sao Paulo. During the 1970s, the stud book became closed in Brazil. Due to this, the Fila Brasileiro split into two different bloodlines.
The two bloodlines are often referred to by their registries, which are the Council Bluffs Kennel Club (CBKC) and the Club for the Improvement of the Fila Brasileiro (CAFIB). The CAFIB offers evaluation and registration for dogs that aren't registered for the purpose of preserving the working capabilities of these dogs in remote regions. Fila Brasileiros are great at herding, tracking and controlling livestock and large game.
Appearance The Fila Brasileiro has a rectangular structure and is well-boned. Dogs of this breed have pendulous skin and a long muzzle. The neck of these dogs is thick and has a dewlap. Their skin is loose and thick, often producing folds that extend even to their abdomen and chest. They have a strong and straight back that rises gently towardS their hindquarters. Female dogs of this breed are distinctly more feminine than males.
Colours The typical coat colours of this breed include black, brindle, and fawn. Aside from that, these dogs may sport any colour, be it solid or brindle, except for mouse gray, white, black and tan or dappled. These dogs may have a black mask. They may also have white markings on their chest, feet, and the tip of their tail.
Temperament These dogs are courageous and powerful. They are loyal to their owners and affectionate with their family members. Once a Fila Brasileiro bonds with its family, it does not need to be taught to protect them. These dogs get along well with children and are very gentle with them even if the kids tend to be harsh to the dog. Aside from that, Fila Brasileiros can also bond with other animals in their home. These dogs need human companionship and should not be left alone for long periods of time. Dogs of this breed are also confident and are not bothered by strange noises. They also do not mind moving to a new environment.
Height and
Weight The height of these dogs is 25.5 to 29.5 inches, and their weight is from 90 to 110 pounds.
Common Health
Problems Fila Brasileiros are susceptible to various ailments such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and gastric torsion. They are also prone to bloating, so owners must feed these dogs two or three small meals each day instead of just one large meal.
Living Conditions Dogs of this breed are not suited for city life. It's best to keep these dogs in a large, fenced yard where they can run around and do some physical activities.
Exercise
Requirements Although some of these dogs can appear lazy, they need to be taken out for walks daily. It's important for these dogs to get their daily dose of exercise.
Training Requirements Fila Brasileiros should be taken care of by owners who already know how to handle dogs of this breed. Owners should be able to display strong leadership skills and establish that humans are higher in pack rank than canines are. It's also important for owners to decide whether they want to socialize the dog throughout its life or if they want to stop socializing their Fila after it turns four years old. Dogs who have been stopped from socializing end up being distrustful of strangers.
Life Expectancy These dogs live for around 9 to 11 years.
Grooming The short-haired, smooth coat of these dogs is easy to groom. Owners just need to brush the coat of their dog regularly using a firm bristle brush and to wipe it with a piece of chamois or toweling to create a gleaming finish.
