General Breed Information

The Fauves de Bretagne includes the Basset Fauve de Bretagne and the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne. The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is said to have been in existence since the Middle Ages. This breed was used for hunting wolves in Brittany, which is a peninsula located in the northwestern area of France. By 1885, there were no more wolves in Brittany, and the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne decreased in number and were bred carelessly with other hounds. Fortunately, breeders have tried to reestablish the breed, implementing strict standards for breeding. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne, on the other hand, may have been created by crossing the large Griffon with bassets that have come from Vendee. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne usually hunts in packs of four, usually going after preys such as hare, wild boar, and rabbit.

Fauves de Bretagne have a height that ranges from 20 to 22 inches and a weight that is approximately 44 pounds. These dogs have a rough coat that can be short or medium in length. The acceptable coat colours for these dogs include solid colours in various shades, ranging from wheaten to red. They may have a small white marking on their chest. The Fauves de Bretagne must not have black hairs.
