General Breed Information

The exact origins of the Dutch Smoushond are unclear. It is theorized, however, that this breed is related to the German Schnauzer, because the two breeds are similar in appearance. Dutch Smoushonds were popular during the late 1800s, when they were used as companions. During the Second World War, these dogs became in danger of extinction. Some attempts were made to revive the breed, but most of these attempts were unsuccessful. During the early 1970s, Mrs. H.M. Barkman started gathering information about the Smoushond. She then studied the old pictures and pedigrees and began talking to judges who were able to remember the breed. Because of this, she became successful in recreating the Dutch Smoushond using selective breeding. Today, there are approximately 125 specimens of this breed registered every year.

Dutch Smoushonds are 14 to 17 inches high and 20 to 22 pounds heavy. They have a moderately long head, with a slightly rounded skull. Their medium-sized, round eyes are brown, and their nose is black. They have rounded ears that hang close to their head. These dogs have a deep chest and well-sprung ribs. The forelegs of these dogs is powerful and straight, and their hind legs are muscular, with hocks and stifles that are bent slightly. The coat of these dogs is coarse and wiry, and is solid yellow in colour.

The life expectancy of these dogs ranges from 12 to 15 years.
