General Breed Information
The Cypro Kukur is believed to be a direct descendant of the war dogs that were brought by Alexander the Great to India in 300 BC. The name "Cypro Kukur" means "Cyprus Dog," but there is no proof that the breed originated in Cyprus. Also called the Kumaon Mastiff, the Cypro Kukur served as a guardian for the ancient Indian Kumaon tribes. Some specimens of this breed have been brought to Europe, particularly in Finland and Italy, that it is possible for these dogs to have a bigger population there than in India.
Cypro Kukurs look similar to the dogs of Sindh, and they also resemble old-type Great Danes. Cypro Kukurs have a body that is fairly lean, muscular, and well-boned. They have a strong neck and a large, powerful head. They have a short, soft coat that always comes in brindle, ranging from dark to light shades. They may also have white markings. The average height of these dogs is 28 inches.
