General Breed Information

The Cretan Hound is a primitive hunting breed. There are artifacts and writings that document the existence of these dogs. These dogs were used and cultivated by the Minoan civilization. Cretan Hounds served as coursing and tracking hounds, and were often used for chasing and catching wild rabbits and hare on harsh terrains. In ancient times, these dogs were brought to the Greek colonies and various countries in Europe. It's theorized that the ancestors of these dogs may have come from Africa, but they eventually adapted life in Crete. These dogs were isolated in the area for so long that they remained pure. The breeding practices used on these dogs were severe, and that's why this breed is particularly healthy and strong.

Male dogs of this breed stand at more than 27 inches, while females have a height of more than 19 inches. These dogs have a weight that ranges from 44 to 66 pounds. Cretan Hounds are slender dogs with a wedge-shaped head and pricked ears that fold backwards. They have a long tail that is curved upwards. These dogs are slightly longer compared to their height. They have a slender yet powerful loan, and the points of their hip bones are slightly prominent. Their coat can come in colours such as fawn, black, brindle, white, cream, and sandy. They can also be bicoloured or tricoloured.

Cretan Hounds can live for around 10 to 12 years.
