General Breed Information
The Chien De L' Atlas, also known as the Aidi, is a dog breed that originated in Morocco. This breed may have been brough to Africa from Spain or from Italy by Phoenicians. In Morocco, the Chien De L' Atlas was used for defending its owners and their property from wild animals. In 1963, the breed standard was published with the name Atlas Sheepdog, although these dogs aren't sheepdogs. In 1969, this mistake was corrected.
The Chien De L' Atlas has a height that ranges from 20 to 24 inches and a weight that falls between 45 and 60 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a bear-like head with dark eyes. Their wedge-shaped muzzle ends in a black nose. They have semi-erect ears and teeth that meet in a scissors or level bite. Their neck is muscular and has a thick mane. These dogs have a wide and deep chest, straight forelegs, and hind legs that are moderately bent at the stifle. Their feet are well-knuckled and have thick pads. The coat of these dogs is thick, weather resistant, and coarse. The acceptable coat colours include fawn, sand, white, tricolour, and blackened fawn.
The life span of these dogs is approximately 12 years.
