History The origins of the Catalan Sheepdog can be traced back to the time of the ancient Romans. Catalan Sheepdogs are considered as one of the oldest dog breeds. When the Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula during 200-100 B.C., they brought dogs with them which were the ancestors of the Italian Bergamasco. These dogs then bred with native Catalan dogs. The result of this breeding brought into existence many different breeds, which includes the Catalan Sheepdog.
The Catalan Sheepdog is a versatile working dog that can be used for herding and guarding livestock. Dogs of this breed are still being utilized in the Pyrenean Valley regions and in Catalonia. Due to the destruction of most farms because of war, though, these dogs declined in number and became rare. They are also relatively unknown in areas outside Spain. During the 1970s, though, a group of Catalan Sheepdog enthusiasts decided to continue breeding Catalan Sheepdogs to increase their number. They were able to succeed in increasing the number of these dogs, but to this day, the Catalan Sheepdog is still considered a rare breed. These dogs are now being used not just for herding and guarding, but also for agility, competitive stock dog trials, and search and rescue.
