Origin / History The origins of the Catalan Sheepdog can be traced back to the time of the ancient Romans. Catalan Sheepdogs are considered as one of the oldest dog breeds. When the Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula during 200-100 B.C., they brought dogs with them which were the ancestors of the Italian Bergamasco. These dogs then bred with native Catalan dogs. The result of this breeding brought into existence many different breeds, which includes the Catalan Sheepdog.

The Catalan Sheepdog is a versatile working dog that can be used for herding and guarding livestock. Dogs of this breed are still being utilized in the Pyrenean Valley regions and in Catalonia. Due to the destruction of most farms because of war, though, these dogs declined in number and became rare. They are also relatively unknown in areas outside Spain. During the 1970s, though, a group of Catalan Sheepdog enthusiasts decided to continue breeding Catalan Sheepdogs to increase their number. They were able to succeed in increasing the number of these dogs, but to this day, the Catalan Sheepdog is still considered a rare breed. These dogs are now being used not just for herding and guarding, but also for agility, competitive stock dog trials, and search and rescue.

Appearance The Catalan Sheepdog is a medium-sized breed that possess a body that seems quite tall for its stature. Dogs of this breed look quite high on their legs. These dogs possess strong limbs that are well-muscled and a deep, long chest. The head of these dogs is wide and sturdy, with strong jaws and a nose that appears prominent. Their average-sized ears are left as is and hang down the sides of their cheeks. Their tail is long enough to reach their hocks, and their forelegs are covered with long hair. These dogs have dark eyes that are round in shape. Their coat is long, smooth, straight, and slightly wavy.

Colours Dogs of this breed have a coat that can come in various colours, including chestnut, fawn, black, world, yellow-red, and gray. They may also have white hairs interspersed through their coat.

Temperament Catalan Sheepdogs are intelligent and courageous. They possess much energy and are very hardworking dogs. In Spain, these dogs are widely used for herding sheep. Dogs of this breed are very attentive; they learn easily and often take the initiative to herd the flock. These dogs also make great guard dogs because they do what they can to defend their family. As pets, Catalan Sheepdogs are calm and loyal. They are even excellent when it comes to dealing with children and other household pets. When it comes to dealing with strangers, though, these dogs can be very reserved.

Height and Weight Dogs of this breed have a height of around 16 to 22 inches and a weight of approximately 26 to 40 pounds.

Common Health Problems These dogs are considered hardy and healthy with no genetic health problems. Like other dogs, though, they can be afflicted with hip dysplasia.

Living Conditions Catalan Sheepdogs prefer to live outdoors and should not be kept in small apartments. Dogs of this breed can't tolerate other weather conditions than the one it has been used to. It's also important for these dogs to be given adequate exercise so that they'll stay calm when indoors.

Exercise Requirements These dogs need much exercise and should be taken out for long walks daily. These dogs should also be allowed to run around and play in a secure area.

Training Requirements Dogs of this breed are highly intelligent and are easy to train. Owners should train these dogs using consistent firm but gentle methods. These dogs should also be socialized well at a young age.

Life Expectancy The average life span of Catalan Sheepdogs is 12 to 14 years.

Grooming Owners should brush the coat of their dogs regularly using a firm bristle brush. Bathing these dogs must be done only when necessary.
