The exact origin of the Cao de Castro Laboreiro is unknown, although there are many theories offered. The dog got its name from the town of Castro Laboreiro, which is located in the far north of Portugal. Although this place now has modern highways, it was once a remote area. There are some written records mentioning the Cao de Castro Laboreiro during the 19th century. It is believed that modern dogs of this breed are descended from a certain old molosser-type that worked with livestock herders in mountainous areas. These dogs defended the livestock against wolves and other large predators. These dogs were first presented at a dog show in 1914. In 1935, the first breed standard was written. This breed is recognized by various organizations such as the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and the United Kennel Club.

These dogs have a height that ranges from 20 to 24 inches and a weight that falls between 50 and 75 pounds, with females being slightly smaller than males. The Cao de Castro Laboreiro is a large dog, but is not oversized. The coat of these dogs is dense, weather-resistant, and coarse. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include mahogany, black, and chestnut.
