General Breed Information

The Bukovina Sheepdog is a native breed developed in the Carpathic region of Bukovina, in the North- East of Romania. Dogs of this breed are used as herding dogs and guarding dogs. Breeders of the Bukovina Sheepdog were very particular about selecting dogs and improving this breed. The first breed standard for the Bukovina Sheepdog was written in 1982 and updated in 2001. It was updated according to the 1987 model established by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) General Assembly from Jerusalem.

Bukovina Sheepdogs have a large, muscular body. Their back is well supported, and they have a tall, broad chest. They have arched ribs and massive necks that are strong, long, and bulky. The head of these dogs is very large, and their skull is fairly broad with a slightly marked stop. They have a cone-shaped, tapered muzzle that is equal in length to their skull. They have a strong jaw with white teeth that meet in a scissors bite. The almond-shaped eyes of these dogs are small and hazel or chestnut in colour. These dogs have V-shaped ears that are high set and lie close to their cheeks. Bukovina Sheepdogs have a straight coat that is white, with markings that are sand-charcoal or black, or in brindled patches. They may also be solid black or solid white. The height of these dogs is 25 to 30 inches, and their weight is well proportioned to their height.
