General Breed Information

Aside from the Fila Brasileiro, the Brazilian Terrier is the only breed native to Brazil. It is believed that dogs of this breed are descendants of the Jack Russell Terriers that were brought from Europe to Brazil during the 19th century. The Brazilian Terrier was also created by crossing Jack Russell Terriers with Miniature Pinschers. It is also said that large Chihuahuas were used for the foundation of this breed. Although this breed has existed for a century already, it has only been registered in 1973. These dogs are popular in their native land, but is fairly unknown outside Brazil.

Brazilian Terriers stand at 14 to 16 inches and weigh from 15 to 20 pounds. These dogs have a narrow, well-proportioned, compact body. They have a flat, triangular skull and a narrow chest. The tail of these dogs may be docked or left natural. Their coat is tri-colour; it is white and tan with markings of brown, blue, or black.

When properly taken care of, these dogs can live for around 12 to 14 years. These dogs are easy to groom and maintain. Owners just need to brush the coat of these dogs regularly. Bathing Brazilian Terriers should only be done occasionally.
