General Breed Information

The Bohemian Shepherd has existed in the Czech Republic since the 1300s and has been professionally bred as early as the 1500s. It is also believed that this breed is an ancestor of the German Shepherd. In 1984, a modern breeding program for the Bohemian Shepherd was started in the Czech Republic. Today, there are numerous breeders for this dog. The Bohemian Shepherd is recognized nationally in the Czech Republic, but is not recognized by any major kennel club.

Bohemian Shepherds are 19 to 22 inches tall and 35 to 55 pounds heavy. They are medium-sized, with a body that is a little longer than its height. These dogs have a sturdy, compact build. Their small ears are pointed, high set and stand erect on top of their head. As puppies, they look almost identical, but as they grow, their coat colours change. Bohemian Shepherds have a long double coat that is furry and fluffy. The only acceptable coat colours are black and tan. Despite their long hair, these dogs are easy to groom and maintain. They should just be brushed occasionally, although more frequent brushing is needed during shedding season to get rid of loose and dead hair.
